The death toll reached 695, by far the most of any twister, with at least 2,000 more injured. Covering three states, (hence the name) the twister’s journey lasted for 219 miles finally retiring in Petersburg, Indiana. An estimated 15,000 homes were destroyed not counting the many schools, churches, and business. This tornado was clearly a once in a lifetime occurrence, hopefully not even that often.
