These notes explain some basic laws and definitions of energy in general and how organisms use energy.
Energy
Energy - the ability to do work (move matter)
2 types: Kinetic Energy - energy doing work
ex: heat (moving molecules)
light
Potential Energy - stored energy; can be as a result of
location or arrangement
ex: roller coaster - at 100 ft high there is more
potential energy than at 25 ft high
cells - molecules have potential energy due to the arrangement of the atoms
Chemical Energy - potential energy of molecules important for living organisms
Thermodynamics
Thermodynamics - study of energy

interfere with enzyme activity
2 types: (See Figure 5.8 page 78)
Competitive - resembles the normal substrate and
competes for the active site
Noncompetitive - Doesn't enter the active site, but binds
elsewhere to the enzyme and distorts the shape of the active site so the substrate can no longer fit.
Negative Feedback - Products of the reaction block the reaction
Ex: If too much ATP is produced during ATP synthesis, ATP acts as its own inhibitor to stop ATP production
