Although the fingersmith is supposedly a criminal, his crimes are justified when he helped the writer by stealing the notebook and gain admiration instead. Unlike other Roald Dahl's stories, this one ended on a happy note, which is very rare. This did not make the story any less successful. Instead, it makes the reader happy to find out that the horrible policeman was not able to charge the writer.
