He was appointed Consultant of Poetry at the Library of Congress, in 1958. He was also invited to speak at the Inauguration of President Kennedy, the first time an American poet has ever been so honored. However, sadly, shortly after midnight on January 28, 1963, he passed away at the age of eighty-nine.
