heart attack when she initially heard of her husband’s death. She died when she saw him alive.
Readers are warned from the beginning that Mrs. Mallard has a weak heart which foreshadows
her death. The doctors assume that she died from the joy of seeing her husband alive, calling it
“the joy that kills.” This phrase ironically depicts her marriage as well.
