Valjean by forgiving him. Ironically, ValJean had shown mercy to Javert as well. ValJean never cursed Javert to his face, never once did him any deliberate harm. ValJean even had the opportunity to kill Javert and end any threat of ever being discovered. However, ValJean, in each case showed the utmost mercy and respect for Javert.
