Many American critics have asserted that the most well developed character in The Sun Also Rises is Robert Cohn. He is falsely sentimental, maudlin about his emotions, true to no code or no one, and he is totally self involved. The best analogy for the personality of Cohn comes from Hemingway himself: “The steer who had been gored had gotten to his feet and stood against the stone man. None of the bulls came near to him and he did not attempt kin the herd”(145).
