Gilgamesh is known as the first great heroic narrative of world literature. Scholars have found that the origins of Gilgamesh were written on tablets throughout the Middle East and in cuneiform. The history of the text is far from being fully understood, but it is believed that this work was written between 2500-1500 B.C. it was not worth doing because it would not have benefited the author in any way. The story of Gilgamesh only loses credit by making it into something it is not. Therefore, one can say the author or authors did not accomplish the task. Just as a wise person once stated, “If the shoe fits, wear it,” and in this case the story of Gilgamesh fits the characteristics of a myth – not a classical epic.
