About 194,000 Union soldiers and about 214,000 Confederate soldiers were held prisoners during the civil War. The North and the South had about major prison camps each. Both sides also set up temporary prison quarters. Prison conditions were generally miserable because the camps were overcrowded and officials could not provide adequate care. In the South where such necessities as food and clothing were in short supply for the Confederacy’s own soldiers and civilians.
